An excerpt from RTNA 2009 by Matthew Sander:

9.1 Lessons Learned
Wednesday June 17, 2009
Turkey Point, Ontario

What is this fluffy thing my head is on? And my body—it seems to be absolutely comfortable! I found these thoughts running through my head as I woke up in my bed after only 4 short nights tent camping. I can’t wait for the feeling after weeks of camping and hiking! I arose to the sounds of Bryan and Jeremy chatting in the front room of the front cottage at a little before 11 am. Bryan had apparently been up for a couple hours getting to know the neighbors—Mike and Leora (Ferras). Mike told Bryan about the vandals that smashed his decorative pot in the street and Bryan told Leora about our tire changing escapade. The three of us, ridiculously hungry from skipping a substantial dinner the night before, indulged in 4 egg omelets. A couple lessons were learned this morning while breakfast was being made:

• While cutting into the last of Moira’s banana bread, Jeremy informed us that the cooler water had infiltrated the aluminum foil and saran wrap defense. As I unpacked the rest of the cooler contents I was disheartened to find that the relentless cooler water rendered tortillas inedible and milk undrinkable. Lesson: Ziploc bags are your best friend. (I know Mom, you only told me 50 times)

A. Upon the first bite of his omelet, Jeremy let out a disappointing, “Arrrrgh.” To his (and my) disappointment the vegetables Bryan pre-cooked for the omelet lacked a satisfying crunch and punch of flavor. Jeremy then kindly explained the reasons one should never pre-cook the veggies to Bryan. Lesson: Don’t let Bryan cook omelets.

We sat in the front room and sipped on hot triple Echinacea green tea (the kind with a picture Emily Curren on the box) while the rain beat against the front of the house and kite surfers entertained our eyes, and Bryan’s explanations of why Collective Action will never work entertained our brains. Jeremy began reading our journal entries when Leora came to the front door with her youngest daughter, Jenise. After some confusion about the urgency of our tire situation, Leora brought to our attention that we got a second flat some time in the night. Great. This time a nail punctured the rear left wheel and let all the air out. We put on our waterproof NASCAR gear and began taking off the second flat tire and retrieved the first shredded tire from its position underneath the car. Leora kindly gave us, Jenise, and our two poor tires a ride to Marvin’s Tire Service a couple miles up the road. One plugged tire, one new tire, $126 (Canadian), and 15 minutes later we were on our way to check out the Ferras’ new house under construction in Simcoe while Bryan quizzed Jenise on colors in the back seat. Jenise and Leora led a tour through wood stud framing of their 10,000 sq. ft. house definitely built to entertain. You could see the excitement in her eyes as Leora described the rooms, finishes, and events that would exist in physical form in only a few short months. We enjoyed the opportunity to walk through a half finished structure to see construction details. A quick stop at Sobey’s grocery store allowed Leora to pick up dinner for the family while I ran in to get some baked goods. We got back, put the tires in place and had a relaxing evening with bellies full of delicious hamburgers and hot dogs. I cut off all my hair and went to bed.
